Sport students pitch their sports drinks to a Dragon’s Den panel

📆 Monday 2 November

Sport and Exercise Science students at Bridgwater College have put their sports nutrition knowledge to the test by creating their own sports drinks and pitching their ideas to a panel of Dragons.

The Year 2 Level 3 students worked in teams to develop a sports drink brand, designing logos, packaging and slogans, identifying target markets and producing TV adverts. They also formulated three types of sports drinks: hypotonic, isotonic and hypertonic, applying the nutritional theory they have been learning as part of their exam preparation.

Each team presented its product to the panel before inviting the Dragons to taste and evaluate their drinks. The students impressed with their creativity, branding and understanding of the science behind their products.

The winning team, Skadoosh, stood out with a well-developed business plan, clear target marketing and a considered pricing structure. The team also explored opportunities for athlete endorsements and investment, including the potential to work with large, established supermarket chains, demonstrating an understanding of how to take a product from concept towards the marketplace.

We really enjoyed the project because it was hands-on and gave us another way to learn. Everyone shared ideas and contributed, and using our iPads helped us work together and bring our ideas into one project.

The challenge combined classroom learning with real-world application, helping students develop their teamwork, communication, problem-solving and presentation skills while revising key topics for their Nutrition for Sport and Exercise Performance exam. Using their iPads to share ideas and collaborate also helped students make the most of digital tools as part of the creative process.

This is a great example of innovative teaching that brings classroom learning to life. By applying their knowledge in a practical way, students reinforce their understanding of sports nutrition while revising key topics for their exams. It’s fantastic to see their creativity and enthusiasm.
