Visit strengthens industry links and gives students real insight into emergency care careers

Students from the 999 Academy at UCS College Group recently visited the Dorset & Somerset Air Ambulance base for a hands-on learning experience.

The visit was organised by Critical Care Paramedic Neil Bizzell, who has been working closely with the College Group. He supports the 999 Academy programme by delivering specialist sessions and sharing real industry knowledge.

Learning through practical experience

During the visit, students took part in a full day of practical activities. These sessions built on the skills they have already developed in the classroom.

Students practised advanced CPR with airway management, as well as intraosseous (IO) access and intubation. They also explored trauma care, including the use of pelvic binders, splinting, and managing mid-shaft femur injuries.

To support learning, students rotated through a series of activities. Each session was led by Year 1 and Year 3 Paramedic Science students from Bournemouth University. This created a supportive and engaging environment for everyone involved.

Insight into future pathways

The visit gave students the chance to learn from those already progressing in the field. They asked questions, shared experiences, and gained a better understanding of the next steps available to them.

As a result, students left with a clearer view of future pathways. This included both university routes and apprenticeships within the emergency services sector.

Strengthening partnerships

The experience also highlights the strong partnership between UCS College Group and Dorset & Somerset Air Ambulance. By working together, both organisations can provide meaningful, real-world opportunities for students.

These experiences play an important role in preparing learners for careers in emergency services. They help build confidence, develop practical skills, and bring learning to life.
