Bridgwater College learners support communities through sport and education

Sport and Exercise Science students from Bridgwater College have returned from a 16-day trip to South Africa, where they supported young people through sport and education.

A group of thirty-five Year 2 students travelled to Port Elizabeth to volunteer with the charity United Through Sport. The organisation works with young people in disadvantaged communities, using sport and education to build confidence and create positive futures.

Supporting communities through sport

During the trip, students delivered coaching sessions in football, hockey, rugby, cricket and netball. They adapted their sessions to suit different ages and abilities. As a result, they built strong connections with the young people they worked with.

In addition, students supported classroom learning. They delivered English and maths sessions, helping to develop key skills outside of sport. This gave them valuable experience in both coaching and teaching.

A tournament to remember

The trip ended with a large sports tournament. Students planned, organised and delivered the event for more than 240 local children. Schools from across the area came together for a day of competition and teamwork.

The event was a huge success. It showed the students’ organisation, leadership and commitment. It also gave them the chance to see the impact of their work first-hand.

A life-changing experience

For many students, the trip had a lasting impact. Level 3 Sport and Exercise Science student Declan Berry said:

I found the South Africa trip life changing and by far the best experience I’ve had so far. Seeing how differently life in the township is really opened my eyes and made me appreciate what we have in England.

I will never forget the tournament day. As the head official for football, I refereed the final which ended in a penalty shootout. All of the schools gathered around to celebrate the winning goal.

Before the trip, I wasn’t sure what I wanted to do at university. After this experience, I know I want to become a sports coach or teacher. I’m very grateful for the opportunity.

Building skills for the future

Course Leader and Trip Lead Jonny Hunt described the experience as a transformational opportunity for students.

Our students showed maturity, leadership and compassion throughout the trip. They embraced every challenge and built strong relationships with the young people they worked with.

This experience developed their coaching and teaching skills. It also gave them a deeper understanding of different communities and the power of sport to make a difference.
