Guest speakers from Border Force and the Black Rock Centre inspire students with real-world experiences and interactive demonstrations.
Students on the Level 2 Public Services and Level 3 Uniformed Protective Services courses recently welcomed guest speakers from Border Force and the Black Rock Centre, offering valuable insight into careers within the sector.
Andrew from Border Force spoke to both groups about his role at passport control, including how individuals are processed and how prohibited items are identified and seized. Mike Adams, a Specialist Firearms Instructor, shared his career journey from the Royal Marines into the police force, giving students a real-world perspective on progression within public services.
The sessions were highly interactive, with students asking a wide range of questions and engaging fully throughout. Mike also brought a selection of specialist equipment, giving students the opportunity to examine and try on items used in the field.
Reflecting on the visit, Mike Adams said:
The college visit included students interested in a diverse range of public service careers, as well as some still exploring their vocational direction. The students were engaging, curious and asked thoughtful, relevant questions. Their enthusiasm was clear, especially when it came to trying on and exploring the equipment. It was reassuring to see so many motivated individuals who are already building strong foundations for their future and for the future of our society.

Students also shared positive feedback following the visit. Level 3 student Frank said: “I found hearing about Mike’s real-life experience in the force interesting and it gave me an insight into what it could be like.” Rachel, also a Level 3 student, added: “I quite enjoyed listening to his insights. It’s interesting to know how many different roles there are within the UPS.”
It was a pleasure to listen to Andrew and Mike talk about their careers. They were both very enthusiastic and supportive, and the students asked lots of questions about the various equipment.
